The City Council wants to use nearly $3 billion in newly discovered money to undo the mayor’s planned budget cuts to libraries and education and expand funding for affordable housing and dozens of other city programs in the next fiscal year, lawmakers said today.
Speaker Adrienne Adams unveiled the City Council’s official response to Mayor Eric Adams’ $102.7 billion preliminary budget, which will serve as the body’s North Star as it kicks off weeks of negotiations with City Hall. As expected, the council is pushing back against the mayor’s widespread cuts, saying instead that the city can afford to spend on essential services.
“Our vision for the city is one that focuses on putting people over everything,” Speaker Adams said in a City Hall news conference.
